There has been a 35% increase in the number of people investigated for threatening the state since last year, according to MI5.
Since 2020, MI5 and police authorities have “disrupted 19 late-stage attack plots” and “intervened in many hundreds of developing threats”, Director General Sir Ken McCallum said on Thursday as part of his annual address in London.

The speech also outlined the geographical variety of threats faced by the UK today.
“Anyone watching the news can see that Russia is committed to causing havoc and destruction,” Sir Ken said, with reference to recent cyber attacks across Europe, but also referred to “foot soldiers” being used by Russia, such as “Bulgarian nationals, motivated by money and the thrill of playing spies”.
Iran’s “autocratic regime” was mentioned, with MI5 having grown its counter-Iran effort in the last year.
“MI5 has tracked more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots in just the one year since I last stood at this podium,” Sir Ken said.
He also said that while the UK-China relationship is “by its nature complex”, MI5’s role “is not”.

It’s hardly a secret that Donald Trump’s social media feed is a carnival of bizarre ideas, but last week the president managed to outdo even himself. The president used his social media platform to promote Star Trek medicine for morons: a fake AI-generated Fox News clip claiming Americans will soon receive “MedBed cards” granting access to miracle pods that cure disease, regrow limbs, and probably make the Epstein Files disappear.
When pressed for an explanation, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took several days to cook up the bold defense: “He has the right to do that.” She even called it “refreshing” that the president is so “open and honest.” Right. He’s honestly spreading QAnon fan fiction about space mattresses while hiding your tax returns and Epstein flight logs.
Leavitt’s logic seems to be that Trump isn’t delusional. He’s just transparent. But what if his tansparency is just boradcasting his delusions? If Biden had posted a video about magical hospital beds, the same folks would be measuring him for a straitjacket on live TV. But when Trump does it, it’s apparently “leadership.”
So here we are: the supposed leader of the free world sharing AI fantasy clips about miracle beds, and his staff acting like it’s a bold new era of medical innovation. America may not have MedBeds, but it definitely has bedlam.
