Two years ago, Russia invaded Ukraine. It was the largest military attack on a European country since World War II. Reliable casualty figures are hard to come by, but U.S. intelligence officials estimated last August that as many as 200,000 Russians and Ukrainians had been killed in the conflict, with an estimated 10 million people displaced.
Congress has allotted n $175 billion in aid for Ukraine since the war began. But our guest today, former Russian MP Ilya Ponomarev, says that we need to do more than merely send aid. He insists that it is imperative to topple Vladimir Putin’s regime altogether. And he is actively working to do just that.

Along with Sir Jeremy Wright, my own MP, I am pleased to see Andrew Mitchel MP returned to parliament as Shadow Foreign Secretary and hope that he can lend his voice and effort to help in whatever way that he can the restoration to freedom and proper medical care of Vladimir Kara-Murza. Vladimir is a close ally of the newly Knighted Sir William (Bill) Browder and is jointly responsible for promoting the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012 (H.R. 4405) ~ The main intention of the law was to punish Russian officials who were thought to be responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky by prohibiting their entrance to the United States and their use of its banking system. The legislation was taken up by a Senate panel the next week, sponsored by Senator Ben Cardin, and cited in a broader review of the mounting tensions in the international relationship. Browder (Now Sir Bill Browder) later wrote that the Magnitsky Act found quick bipartisan support because the corruption exposed by Magnitsky was blatant beyond dispute, and “[t]here wasn’t a pro-Russian-torture-and-murder lobby to oppose it.”
In 2018, the British parliament passed a so-called ‘Magnitsky amendment’ to the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act to give the government the power to impose sanctions on people who commit gross human rights violations.
