An Overview of the Motives of concern and the resources deployed to ensure the security of Europeans.

March 2022. Three hundred French soldiers land in Estonia. The French contingent reinforces the Baltic States’ defense system alongside other battalions under the banner of the Atlantic Alliance. While the Baltic Sea provides a maritime outlet to eight European Union countries, its coasts also border Kaliningrad, a heavily militarized exclave granted to the USSR in 1945. Since the launch of the “special operation” launched on February 24, 2022, by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine, tensions have risen in Russia’s neighboring states.

Already worried about Moscow’s imperialist actions since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the Donbass War, the three small Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) are on high alert. The same is true for Sweden, which has deployed troops on the island of Gotland, and for Finland, which shares some 1,300 kilometers of border with the Russian Federation. Relinquishing their historical near-neutrality, the latter requested integration into NATO forces last May.
