In the first part of a two-part film, we follow Leutnant Sander on the strenuous and costly race towards Leningrad and learn about the murderous and terrifying goals of the German campaign in the east.

This feature length documentary lays bare the brutal reality of life on the Eastern Front during the Second World War, offering a unique and detailed account from the perspective of a German tank commander. We used rare archive footage from Operation Barbarossa to bring his story to life, showing how Hitler’s dream of crushing Stalin’s Soviet Union came to a grinding halt during the Russian winter.
